Many people are currently working from home. If you find yourself in that fortunate situation, the space in your bedroom, office, or dedicated home workspace should be as comfortable as possible. Choosing the right desk is as crucial as your back and posture.
Buying a new desk, especially one ergonomically designed for comfort and stability, can cost well over hundreds of dollars, but you don’t need to spend all that money. According to a TikTok video by @shecreates.co_, you can create your own ideal desk and make it as stylish as any other by using a few painted concrete blocks to support a long wooden board.

Choosing the right type of concrete block is important because you don’t want to accidentally bring home one with irregular notches like a doorstop block. The concrete block used in this hack is hollow or tubular, but you can use a solid block if you wish—just don’t expect it to have the same look and style as the hollow block.
One block costs about $3, and you’ll need at least four for this hack (you may need more depending on how you create the desk). For the desk tabletop, you can get a suitable board for less than $2 per foot, which can be covered with paint or left as is.
How to create your unique desk
The first step to creating your affordable desk is to prepare your concrete blocks for painting. If they are old, remove dust, cobwebs, and debris. Then, prime the blocks, sealing all porous gaps in them. Concrete expands and contracts with heat and cold, which can cause cracks in the paint, so you must ensure it is properly prepared. Next, you can cover them with satin paint for concrete and wood.
Once all blocks are painted and dry, you can stack them vertically, two on each side. You can stack them horizontally as well, but that means you’ll need more concrete blocks to reach an adequate height. You can also join the concrete blocks with mortar before painting to achieve an extra sturdy design, but that’s not necessary.
Place the tabletop on the two stacks to create your own home office for a fraction of the price of a new desk. You can leave the board as it is for a rustic contemporary look, but if you want an even more appealing look, smooth the edges and paint. Additionally, while the hollow gaps in the concrete blocks make your desk stand out, they are also useful as storage spaces for paper prints, supplies, or even small decorative succulents.
