Many luxury residential buildings have pools. To differentiate themselves in this increasingly populous aquatic landscape, some developers are getting creative. The latest innovation in this out-of-the-box thinking is in London, where the apartments of Embassy Gardens today unveiled the largest suspended acrylic pool in the world.
The structure is called Sky Pool since it’s suspended about 35 meters in the air. It connects the two towers of the gardens on their roofs and is about 25 meters long – 14 meters of this length are suspended in the air.
So, those with a bit of fear of heights can stay in the water at either end of the structure. That’s where it’s anchored to the roofs and resembles two traditional pools.
Naturally, it took some planning to suspend so much water in the air. It’s a collaboration between the architecture firm Arup, the engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan, and the acrylic manufacturer Reynolds Polymer Technologies.
The towering structure of Embassy Gardens was built at Reynolds’ facilities in Colorado before being shipped to London. Ultimately, to prevent the pool from cracking under the immense weight of all the water (and people), it was made with a bottom nearly 30 centimeters thick.
