Paint experts predict that shades of brown will be big this year. In fact, Dunn Edwards, Pantone, and Benjamin Moore have chosen brown-toned shades as their colors of the year for 2025.

DIYer Amber Ingram’s (@westonwillow_) bathroom renovation is a wonderful example of how brown can dominate a room from head to toe. “Brown is the moment,” Amber writes on Instagram — and her bathroom is not only completely modern but also timelessly functional.

Amber’s advice for the bathroom renovation is sixfold: start with a plan, prioritize functionality, embrace customization, be patient, work with what you already have, and have fun, she says. Her bathroom renovation incorporates all these principles.

Frames and paint add personality to the walls.

“This was a no-demo bathroom renovation,” says Amber. Instead, she relied on paint and frames to completely change the look of the bathroom, and she says the latter made the biggest difference.

“Although the bold paint color [Behr’s Swiss Brown] was a statement, any color would have complemented the frame beautifully,” she says. Cutting and adding the frame to the walls took a lot of trial and error — especially around the cabinet between the studs.

Speaking of the cabinet between the studs, Amber added one to this bathroom on the same wall as the towel rack. “With the right tools and a bit of creativity, you can make big changes without heavy demolition or advanced skills,” she says. “When I needed to check inside my walls for plumbing and electricity before building my cabinet between the studs, I used my phone to record a video instead of investing in an expensive camera.”

She also added a medicine cabinet from Amazon and gave it a more personalized look by swapping out the original glass for plexiglass and a peel-and-stick corrugated window decal “for a textured and stylish finish,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to modify thrifted or ready-made items to suit your needs.”

A new mirror completes the space.

Where the medicine cabinet mirror once was, Amber added a new mirror with a gold frame, and she also added some gold hooks and a hand towel rack to the renovated bathroom. “If a full demo isn’t in the plans, focus on smaller, impactful changes like paint, framing, or updated hardware,” says Amber. “This can completely transform a space without a major renovation.”
