Columbus, Ohio might not be your first pick among U.S. cities for top interior design, but this remodeled bathroom might change your mind.

With a style that leans less Midwest and more Cali-cool, this modern, California-inspired bathroom blends natural materials, sophisticated earthy tones, and high-end finishes to create a space that strikes the ideal balance between elegance and comfort.

The color palette mixes warm beiges, soft tones, and visual texture, resulting in a space that feels like a true breath of fresh air. If you already believe in the power of neutrals in interior decor, this bathroom will win you over even more — and if you don’t yet, this project might just be your turning point.

Before

This 1970s-style bathroom featured outdated tiles, wallpaper, and a tub with tiled steps — elements that made it feel dated and not very functional.

The Hackett House Studio team decided to work with the original bathroom layout, despite its limitations. “The original space was poorly designed, but it had a really good size,” says Erin Hackett Nordholt, founder of the studio. The layout, with a bulky central shower and a cramped toilet in one corner, compromised functionality and made the room feel smaller.

During the complete remodel, the team removed sloped walls and uncovered a hidden cavity, which allowed them to reorganize the space more efficiently. The new layout added openness and flow — key elements for a modern and functional bathroom.

The original window couldn’t be moved, but it became a focal point by placing the built-in tub directly underneath and reflecting natural light with a strategically placed mirror. This solution not only preserved the lighting but also enhanced the spa-like aesthetic of the bathroom.

The end result is a neutral and sophisticated bathroom, with dark wood cabinetry, gold handles, marble countertops, and brass fixtures — creating a space that balances thermal comfort, refined aesthetics, and practicality.

Erin explains that the client had three main requests: a large tub, a double sink, and a walk-in shower (no traditional enclosure). These elements were integrated smoothly, respecting the space and the desire for a modern, relaxing, and elevated ambiance.

The choice of visually impactful natural materials, like Botticini Tumbled marble flooring, added rich texture and a timeless aesthetic. Despite the client’s initial hesitation about tonal variation, the result exceeded expectations, making the flooring one of the standout features of the project.

Considering the room’s dimensions, the client opted for a built-in tub with a deck — more practical and seamlessly integrated. The installation of a Brizo faucet with handheld shower added not only functionality but also sophistication with its brass finish.

To complement the space, a golden wicker pendant light was added above the tub — an unexpected and charming touch that unites natural materials and contemporary design, turning the area into a visual focal point.

The project also includes Taj Mahal countertops, custom solid oak sinks with espresso finish, modern sconces from Mitzi, and brass hardware from Rejuvenation. All of these elements reinforce the warm and luxurious style of the renovation.

According to Erin, this bathroom will serve as the aesthetic reference for the rest of the house, which is set to undergo renovations in the coming years. With a blend of coziness, originality, and sophistication, the space shows how well-executed interior design can transform the experience of a room.
